WordPress Sidebar Login Widget Update
This plugin has now been replaced by an updated version which you can find here
A number of users were experiencing errors with the sidebar login widget I created, issues such as bugs with cookies and headers sent. In a bid to stop these errors I have created a new version, compatible with wordpress 2.3.
This version is different to the others because rather than redirecting to the normal wordpress login page to log the user in, it has the code for login built into it, thus (in theory) solving the cookie/headers problems. Hoorar. Read more about the widget after the break.
This clever little widget lets users login from the sidebar, without even touching the wordpress login page. Very handy. The official post is here. Enjoy =)

Mark Gilbert says:
Line 37 of the code contains an unescaped ampersand which throws up a rendering error when the page is served as application/xhtml+xml as opposed to text/html.
Changing the line to read as below fixes the problem.

I was hoping that Mark Gilbert’s comment was going to give me the answer to my problem with cookies in WP 2.5, but the new line of code isn’t showing.
I really don’t know what problem his new code is aiming at fixing anyway.
Anyone?

The ampersand in the log out URL
(Line 37: … wp-login.php?action=logout&redirect_to= …)
should be written as a HTML-Entitie to create valid pages.

@ Lynda M – It only shows if registrations are enabled in your blog. Check wordpress settings.
@ Randy – Fixing it myself now, will post when fixed – thanks Mark

First of all thanks for this great widget! My apologies if this has already been answered… but I’m having a hard time trying to change the color of the displayed username with my limited CSS knowledge. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Is anyone having problems with WordPress 2.5? I’ve tried installing this plugin on my theme and the default theme, but when I try to login in PHP returns this error:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function get_userdatabylogin() in /path/to/public_html/wp-includes/capabilities.php on line 153

Hi folks… I got a problem when I click on Dashboard using your wonderful Plugin. I come to the dashboard but the Url says only “http://localhost/wordpress/wp-admin/”
I do a lot of backend hacks… and they don´t work on the dashboard. It took me a day to find out that works well when I fix the url by hand to “http://localhost/wordpress/wp-admin/index.php”
Now i am looking for the line in your plugin to hack it myself… but i a m a designer
Could anyone help, please

Hey Mike…
Finally getting to check this thing out in WP 2.5.1. It works but when logging in it doesn’t quite go all the way. It chokes up at authentication and still makes you login using the wordpress screen.
I’ll try to see if I can’t figure it out, but thought I’d at least shoot it your way.
Thanks for the great plugin and all the help.

Okay – so it’s either being PHP4 that was the problem or beingin a subfolder on the domain.I had this particular WP Blog running in a subfolder since it was a blog in development on a PHP4 host. I have the site live at the domain level with no subfolders now on a PHP5 host and it works.
Weird stuff… but it does work with 2.5.1 for me now.

Hi there,
Firstly, thanks for the great plugin, it is one of the most useful plugins I have found!
I do need some help though, as I seem to get an error fairly often when a user tries to login and it directs them back to the general wordpress login page.
Is there a way to find out the reason for this?
Thanks again for the great plugin!
