MiniCard Theme for WordPress – a cool free business card/social network theme

Updated to 1.1.6 with minor improvements to the free theme, and a new feed system in the premium pack to make Twitter feeds more reliable.

minicard

Want more MiniCard goodness? Purchase the premium pack to gain access to the in-built AJAX RSS feed module, several new sub-themes, priority support, and the warm fuzzy feeling you get by supporting the author! Premium is £25 GBP.

I am releasing my MiniCard theme for wordpress which supports hCard/vCard microformats, tonnes of social networks, showing some portfolio items (optional), and more – all controllable from its own Theme Config page. This theme is free and licensed under GPL – there is also a premium pack available with many theme variations, and the footer feed functionality.

Read more for more information and the download links. I hope you find this theme useful and spread the word :)

About the Theme

MiniCard is a social network/business card WordPress theme inspired by Tim Van Damme’s excellent website. The theme lets you add links to all the social networking sites you may be a member of, and post useful information such as bio’s and contact details. It also has built in hCard support and (optionally) lets you offer a vCard for visitors to download your contact information.

Another useful feature, for those with portfolios, is the ability to set up a portfolio category in which you can set up items to feature below your card. These items are shown as thumbnails/galleries and pop up in a lightbox when clicked.

To control all of the features of MiniCard the theme comes with a useful admin panel for setting up your networks, theme options, and contact details for your hCard.

Since this is only a lightweight mini theme, widgets are not supported. You can however run a mini blog and make posts – these are all styled and fully supported.

To summarise:

  • MiniCard is free to download and licensed under GPL
  • Loads of social networks supported
  • (Optional) Ajax Loading of main navigation links
  • Portfolio functionality with lightboxes
  • Theme Config section and instructions in WordPress admin
  • Built in hCard/vCard support
  • Comes with the default theme
  • Each theme contains several variations – burst, diagonal stripe, horizontal stripe, vertical stripe, tartan.

Setting up the social page

If on the Settings > Reading page you have ‘posts’ shown on the front page, the social networking page will show by default. Otherwise if you are setting the front page make sure you give it the ‘home’ template.

About the Premium Pack

The MiniCard theme itself is free, however I have created a premium pack which simply ‘slots in’ to the free theme. This pack contains:

  • Feed functionality – pull in RSS feeds or your choice, for example your own blog and your twitter posts. Loaded in using AJAX so the page loads faster.
  • Several sub-themes -
    • Blue Anvil Blue
    • Black
    • Grey
    • Pink
    • Helveticard (minimalist theme based on Jon Hicks’ design for Helvetireader)

You also get a warm fuzzy feeling inside knowing that you have helped support the author (me).

Demo

I personally set up my MiniCard Theme to demonstrate the theme in use. You will notice the feed below my card – this is part of the premium pack.

Licence & Donate

The MiniCard theme is licensed under GPL (http://www.opensource.org/licenses/gpl-3.0.html). You may remove the link back in the footer, but I would appreciate if your attributed my work. Remember, the more popular the theme becomes, the more likely it is maintained and updated in the future.

If you wish to make a donation because you like this theme, you can use the ‘Buy me a coffee’ link below, buy the premium pack, or both :)

    Using this inelegant fix that seems to work for now:

    theme header.php

    change

    if ($vcard_tel) echo ‘Phone’.$vcard_tel.”;

    to

    if ($vcard_tel) echo ‘
    work:
    ACTUAL TEL NUMBER’;

    Hi Mike,
    I have just installed Minicard and I really like it. However I would like to turn off the comments on each page and for the life of me, I can’t figure out where to do that. If you help me turn off the comments on each page, I will buy you a coffee!
    Cheers, Andrea

    Hi again,
    I figured out how to turn off the comments but I would also like to remove the “comment form is turned off at this time” blurb at the bottom. I looked at comments.php but not sure that is where I should be looking. Is it possible to make all the comment stuff go away?
    Thank you.

    Once again, I figured out how to get rid of the comments stuff at the bottom of my pages. I think my site looks great. Thank you.

  6. Jon says:

    hey, I’ve been trying to move the footer up some from it’s current location. But I can’t figure out what to edit. I was trying to edit padding in the stylesheet:

    div#footer {
    clear: both;
    color: #A0C4C9;
    line-height: 1.6em;
    padding: 0 12px 72px;
    }

    but I can’t seem to figure it out. I’m guessing it’s something different I need to change that could possibly be in it’s spot that I’m not using since I’ve altered the theme around some.

    anyway, care to take a look when you have some free time?

    thanks,
    Jon

    @Jon: Im not 100% sure what your trying to do, but looks at #subContent too. If you use firebug or chrome developer tools you can inspect the styles on the page.

    the icons that link to minicard theme, to tim, and wordpress.. I want to move up about half an inch? ..maybe not even that much. but so it’s directly under the white part. like how close the “submit comment” button is to this comment box.. or the page links and “previous” button is to where this comment is. It’s just a little bit further down then I want it to be.

    anyways, I’ll take a look at #subContent and/or chrome developer tools if that doesn’t work.

    thanks.

    Hey Mike,

    I just purchased your minicard theme and installed it on two of my new WordPress blogs. 2 for 2 unsuccessful installs!! Not Good… Both errors say that I’m missing a stylesheet and both installs are now categorized under the broken theme category.

    Please Help!!! Very Time Sensative…

    Jason, it’s an addon not a full theme. Pop the premium folder inside the mini card free theme to install.

  16. Rebecka says:

    I wonder why the Premium Pack cost so much? I compare it to other vCards (on ThemeForest for example) and they cost about 10 dollar… They have almost the same functionality as yours just not the twitter posts. I don’t need twitter posts (or have Twitter) but I dislike the default color. :(

    I like your MiniCard thought but miss a red version (like the pink one here but red instead). Will there be a red version?

  17. Rebecka says:

    @Rebecka: One more question, is the theme translation-ready (comes with a .po-file)?

    Comment made on April 29, 2011 at 3:32 am

  18. Mike Jolley says:

    @Rebecka: I’m not bothered what people are doing on themeforest to be honest; Im charging what I feel its worth. The theme itself is free, and anyone is quite free to make their own css styles if they don’t like the default blue.

    No plans for a red one, and it is translation ready (but you need to compile your own .po).

  19. Justin Walker says:

    Greetings, Mike!

    First off, this is an excellent theme you have here. I am having three issues, however, and I’m hoping you can help me with them:

    1. Similar to other people, the “Tel” value does not show up on the vCard. Nothing I have seen has fixed the issue. What would you suggest?
    2. Although I have put in a category ID and number of portfolio items, a separate blog post outside of that category is coming up, making a third portfolio item. I have not seen another issue like this in the comments. Do you have any idea what the problem could be?
    3. Would it be possible to allow more than two portfolio items in one row?

    I hope to hear back from you soon. Thank you.

    Is there a Facebook widget or feed capability with the premium version or is it just twitter?

  23. Asshu says:

    @Mike Jolley

    The theme really rocks and no other VCard Themes from templetic’s, Storeilous’s etc. would beat ‘Mini Card’

    I would like to know if there are any updates and features in near future.

    I just heard about your new project ‘FaultPress’ theme. Seems great ! But I am not sure if it can be compared to ‘Quality Control’.

    Thanks!

  24. George says:

    How do you update the Mini Card free theme to Premium? Do you go to the editor?

    Comment made on May 18, 2011 at 4:48 pm

  25. Mike Jolley says:

    @George: Drop the premium folder into the minicard folder using FTP.

    @Asshu: It will be updated eventually, im just working on other things first. FaultPress’ advantage is the mobile support – I don’t think QC has any features FaultPress doesn’t.

    @George: Works with any public RSS feed.
